(ANS – Rome) – At the beginning of the plenary session of the General Council, the Rector Major and his Council have approved and presented the subject for the 2010 Strenna:

“Sir, we want to see Jesus”
In imitation of Don Rua,
as authentic disciples and zealous apostles
let us bring the Gospel to the young

Introduced by the request made by the Greeks to Philip (Jn 12, 21) who wanted to meet Jesus, the 2010 Strenna invites the various groups of the Salesian Family to devote themselves even more to the evangelisation of the young.

As was announced at the end of the Spirituality Days of the Salesian Family, the centenary of the death of Blessed  Michael Rua, first successor of Don Bosco, provides a background for it.

“The 2010 Strenna takes its cue from the year of St Paul which has almost finished and from the Synod on  the Word of God during which I spoke about the passage in St Luke about the disciples on the way to Emmaus, which on account of the contents and the method is seen as a model for the evangelisation of the young.,” the Rector Major himself explains in  a short comment on the subject of the Strenna.

This year as a novelty, the presentation of the Strenna anticipates the suggestions of the Rector Major for putting it into practice as he invites the groups and the Provincial and local Consultative Committees of the Salesian Family to

  • rethink their pastoral approach to the young, putting at the centre the commitment to education and evangelisation,
  • promote joint experiences of evangelisation,
  • promote, at Province and local level, the mission to youth in which the young people themselves are  evangelisers of their peers,
  • make good use of the Apostolic Exhortations of the various continental Synods.
