(Vatican City) – Today the Holy Father Benedict XVI, accepting the offer of the resignationof Archbishop Pedro Ercílio Simon from the pastoral care of the archdiocese of Passo Fundo, has appointed as his successor Bishop Antônio Carlos Altieri SDB transferring him from the diocese of Caraguatatuba.

The archdiocese of Passo Fundo is a Metropolitan See of the Catholic Church belonging to the Ecclesiastical Region of South 3. It was raised to the status of a Metropolitan See  by Benedict XVI on 13 April 2011. In 2004 the diocese had 366,397 baptised out of 488,530 inhabitants in 53 parishes. The Cathedral is dedicated to Our Lady of Aparecida.
