19/7/2010 - Brazil - Staff and Students celebrated the centenary of the Archdiocese

(ANS – Porto Alegre) – On Thursday 8 July, members of Don Bosco Faculty in Porto Alegre, staff and teachers of the Catholic schools in Porto Alegre met together to celebrate the centenary of the Archdiocese.

The Archdiocese of Porto Alegre, raised to this status on 15 Augost 1910, has 57 educational establishments, and to celebrate this first centenary it planned a meeting for the staff and students, held at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande del Sur (PUCRS). The Don Bosco Faculty and the Don Bosco Institute in Porto Alegre took part with a group of staff and students.
 
The meeting began at 8.00 in the morning with the opening blessing of the Archbishop of Porto Alegre, Dadeus Grings. Then Bro Armando Bortolini, from the PUCRS,  expresseed his own joy at the presence of so many staff from schools and institutes of the various religious familes all united in the same mission. “For us Marist Brothers it is an honour to welcome you,” he said.
 
During the morning there was a workshop on: “Catholic education: memory and prophecy,” led by Frs Bonifacio Schmidt and Ignacio Neutzling, and Prof. Maria Helena Bastos. At the same time for the students there was a conference: “Youth identity and protagonism.”

Then together, the staff and student respresentatives were able to attend a concert given by the Symphonic Orchestra of the PUCRS.

In the afternoon while the staff held a discussion on the subject: “Catholica Education: challenges and prospects,” chaired by Fr Marcos Sandrini and Prof Selina Dal Moro; the student representatives took part in a series of workshops on the subject: “Spaces for and the nature of youth leadership.”

The meeting ended with Mass  at which Archbishop Grings presided and the Auixiliary Bishop of Porto Alegre, Remidio José Bohn, and the priests present concelebrated.
