Diocese of Lwena, Press Statement
Faced with the theft of the statue of Our Blessed Lady the property of the Community of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in the Santa Rosa district and the destruction of a statue of Don Bosco at the Educational Centre, the Diocese of Lwena makes the following declaration:
a) We condenn these acts of religious intolerance and vandalism.
b) We ask the parish clergy responsible for chapels and religious communities to take extreme care in protecting religious objects and in particular the tabernacle.
c) As regards the perpetrators of these acts we offer our forgiveness, in accordance with the Gospel precept, but nevertheless we entrust the case to the authorities so that by taking the appropriate measures they may prevent any repetition of these unpleasant events.
d) The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ and is constantly assisted by the Holy Spirit: the destruction of sacred objects and of places of worship, the placing of obstacles to its being spread, the persecution of its members for religious motives, or by way of unfounded accusations, or by physical aggression will make the Church ever more strong, firm and united.
In Christ Jesus.
Mons. Tirso Blanco, S.D.B.
Bishop of Lwena
