“The Other City” is a social action programme for young people aimed at involving the local communities in which they are living encouraging these to take an interest in them so that all can benefit from the positive results achieved within the community.
Starting in July the project will last a year and can be considered national since it involves three cities: one in the north (Cuneo), one in the centre (L’Aquila) and one in the south (Palermo), very different in themselves but with comparable problems of disadvantaged young people.
In all three cities the need has been seen to increase opportunities for disadvantaged young people of all kinds: cultural, social, recreational, working and meeting together.
Activities will be organised with the collaboration of the “Santa Chiara” Association of Palermo, the “Momo” Social Cooperative of Cuneo and the Salesian “Saint John Bosco” centre in L’Aquila, all of which are associated with the Federation SCS. In particular, L’Aquila has been chosen as the place to monitor in a detailed way the effect the earthquake has had on the local community and its relationships.
In order to build “The Other City” there will be workshops for adults and youngsters. For the young in particular there will be opportunities for art, drama, music and audiovisual activities In addition existing facilities and opportunities for education and culture for the benefit of the young will be noted and listed and attempts made to consolidate any existing forms of youth clubs.
The results of the project while in progress will be publicised through seminars in the cities and then with a final publication. To emphasise the importance of networking and combined efforts by the associations, at L’Aquila it is intended to hold a series of meetings and discussions on the results obtained in collaboration with the National Coordination Committee.
