(ANS – Rome) – This morning the work of the Summer Plenary Session of the  General Council began. For the next two months the Rector Major and his Council will be dealing with issues and topics connected with the animation and government of the Congregation.

As an introduction to the Session, as is customary, they spent a day of reflection yesterday 4 June at the Saint Tarcisius postnovitiate community.

On the Agenda:

• the appointment of 7 new Provincials and Superiors of Vice Province: Paraguay, China, Colombia -Medellín, Mozambique, Africa Great Lakes, India-Dimapur and Brazil-Manus.
• the presentation of reports on the Extraordinary Visitations by the Councillors in recent months: Poland-Krakow (Fr Klement), Salesian Pontifical University (Fr Cereda), Indonesia- East Timor (Fr Wong), Generalate (Fr González), North Argentina (Fr Vitali), East United States (Fr Ortiz), Slovakia (Fr Chrzan), Africa Great Lakes (Fr Basañes), Spain-Madrid  (Fr Núñez Moreno), India-Hyderabad (Fr Kanaga) and  Italy-Special Circumscription of Piedmont and the Val d’Aosta (Fr Frisoli).
• on issues regarding the economy Bro. Muller will present the Accounts for 2011 and the Mission Funds will be distributed.
• other subjects including an update regarding the 27th General Chapter, the structure of government of the Congregation and the Strenna of the Rector Major for 2013.

During the Summer Session due to conclude officially on 27 July, there will be some other engagements: the Team Visit to the “Mary Seat of Wisdom” Vice Province of the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome; participation in celebrations in Krakow for the first centenary of the death of Blessed Fr Bronislao Markiewicz, Founder of the Congregation of Saint Michael the Archangel and of the Sisters of Saint Michael the Archangel – both religious congregations belonging to the Salesian Family – and finally  the six-monthly meeting of the Commission for the Project for Europe. In this Session the course of formation for recently appointed Provincials will not take place. It will be held instead during the next Winter Session.
