(ANS – Guadalajara) – On Sunday 3 June, Fr Santos Guerrero García SDB 70 years of age dies in a car accident while returning to his community after taking part in the monthly meeting of the commission for the institutes in the Mexico-Guadalajara Province (MEG). Fr Guerrero García was Rector of the Salesian community of the “Carlos Gomez” Institute in San Luis Potosí.
The accident happened at about 7.00 in the morning of Sunday 3 June at VII Km on the road between Lagos de Moreno and San Luis Potosí. Most probably he fell asleep and the car left the road and turned over.
The first to receive news of the tragic accident from the authorities was the Provincial Fr Salvador C. Murguía who immediately went to the place of the accident.
Given that he had for many years worked in Salesian schools the news of his death made a great impression on past pupils, teachers, other school staff, parents of pupils and friends especially in the schools in Guadalajara, where Fr Guerrero García had spent practically his whole Salesian life.
To give some impression of the effect the death of the Salesian had on people close to the Salesian houses it is sufficient to mention the number of contacts made on the Provincial web-page which gave news of his death: about 6000 on Sunday alone.
The funeral of Fr Guerrero García was celebrated yesterday, Monday 4 June, in the church of Mary Help of Christians; at the end of the Mass, his mortal remains were buried at the same church.
Fr Guerrero García, born in 1941, was a Salesian for 49 years and a priest for 38. Since 1986 he had been Rector of various Salesian houses and he had been a Provincial Councillor between 2001 and 2011.
