Italy - The years have left their mark
(ANS – Rome: 28 February 2007) - The International Basilica consecrated to the Sacred Heart, in via Marsala Rome, is in need of considerable restoration work. After more than 120 years, attacked by the smog of the city and also probably subjected to the effects of the underground trains on the foundations, the church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus needs a great deal of work doing on it. Don Bosco, already elderly and ill did not want to refuse the request of Pope Leo XIII to complete the construction of the church. He travelled to France and Spain seeking funds and material already used in other churches There are also two rooms at the Sacred Heart where Don Bosco stayed on his jiourneys to Rome until May 1887, when the consecration took place. The approaching bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco (1815-2015) is an occasion to do something about repairing the main structure and also restoring the many artistic parts of the church so that it can continue to welcome the faithful and pilgrims.
