Spain - The “Valencia Solidarity” Award for a Salesian
(ANS – Valencia: 22 February 2007) - On 20 February in the Valencia City Hall there was the award ceremony for the IXth in the series of “Valencia Solidarity,” in appreciation of services rendered in the field of solidarity in the city by organisations and individuals. Fr Ángel Tomás SDB was given an award for his almost forty years of solidarity through his creation of the “Grupo Martes”. Present at the ceremony, at which Marta Torrado Councillor for Social Affairs presided, were Mgr. Salvador Giménez, auxiliary bishop of Valencia, many friends of Fr Tomás and many Salesians including the Provincial of Valencia Fr Juan Bosco Sancho. “Today is a very happy day for me,” Fr Ángel Tomás said as he accepted the award, – “because this recognition expresses appreciation for the Salesian Congregation and for the Church for their constant work on behalf of those most in need.” Fr Tomás recalled the many young people who had been able to re-build their lives and those who had lost their way; he thanked all those who over the years had worked in the “Grupo Martes”, as volunteers, Salesians and lay people. The “Valencia Solidarity” award was also given to the Day Centre of the “Amaltea” Association for the social work it does; to the ASEM, an association involved in caring for those suffering from neuro-muscular illnesses in Valencia, and to the “Justice and Responsibility Project” providing health care for immigrants and for the elderly, organised by a university group led by Prof. Juan Carlos Siurana, a Salesian Past Pupil.
