El Salvador – An Initiative for the Social Integration of Hearing Impaired Students

11 August 2016

(ANS – Soyapango) – The Association of Salesian Students for Thought and Civic Education (AESPEC) and the Salesian Association of Students of Aeronautics (ASEA) of “Universidad Don Bosco” (UDB) in El Salvador recently launched the “Sin Barreras -UDB” (Without Barriers UDB), an initiative that aims at promoting social integration of hearing impaired students in the University, through a series of activities, the first of which is a course of American Sign Language (ASL).

The course is addressed to the entire population of the academic centre (students, teachers and staff) and about 200 people have already enrolled. “The project aims at providing ASL courses, together with conferences and debates to sensitize on the theme, so that all may know the problems of hearing impaired people, not only in the field of education, but also in the labour market and in social reality” said Mariely Rodriguez, President of AESPEC.

According to the representatives of AESPEC and ASEA, “in the Don Bosco University there are some hearing impaired students who sometimes cannot count on somebody to help them communicate with other people, and so it is difficult for them to do certain activities inside the campus”.

The associative vision of ASEA is to organize and favour the participation of the students of the Faculty of Aeronautics of UDB, through an efficient, fruitful and honest team work, in an atmosphere of institutional welfare and Salesian spirituality.

Inspired by the motto “Speak with your hands and make the difference”, the students created a mascot called “Phill”, which represents a monkey that covers its ears with its hands.

According to Secondo Juan Villalobos, a student of Mechatronics Engineering with hearing disabilities, who also is one of the facilitators of the course, “it is an excellent project to integrate deaf people in society and enable others to communicate with us”.
