Malawi – “Reaching out to the young and staying with them”

17 February 2017

(ANS – Nkhotakota) –Malawi is a small country of Southern Africa, with a wonderful nature but with scarce opportunities of work for its people. It is one the ten poorest countries in the world. Patrycja Nabor is a Polish Volunteer who spent two months in Nkhotakota, a harbour town of about 33 thousand inhabitants, located by the side of Malawi Lake. There she worked with the children and youth of the Salesian house.

In her work, the attention of Patrycja was soon drawn by the youth who wandered in the main streets of the town: with no job, they tried to spend their time in some way, until the activities of the youth centre began.

One morning, Patrycja went to the meeting with the youngsters and proposed them to go on a walk to a village close-by. At first they were reluctant to accept her invitation, but eventually they did and they enjoyed a beautiful day. When they reached their destination, all – children, their parents and also the elderly people of the village – greeted them.

“It is unbelievable – Patrycja says – what a wimple walk can give birth to. It opened the hearts of the youngsters and encouraged them to speak of their life, of their plans for the future, of their dreams. How important it is to dedicate a moment of the day to stay with them, to talk about them, to share time with them! Reaching out to the young and staying with them has been an important moment that marked their heart, and certainly mine too. It is worthwhile reaching out to somebody else. You find happiness. You find love and goodness. You find the living God”.
