(ANS - Santiago) - On 21 March there was the opening ceremony of the academic year at the Silva Henríquez Catholic University (UCSH). It was attended by Cardinal Ricardo Ezzati, Archbishop of Santiago, and the Secretary for Social Services of the Ministry of Social Development, Juan Eduardo Faúndez Molina.

The lectio magistralis entitled "Internationalization of the Salesian Institutions of Higher Education" was given by Salesian Brother Mario Olmos Argueta, the former General Coordinator of the Network of Salesian Institutions of Higher Education (IUS) and now Rector of the Don Bosco University in El Salvador.

In his opening speech, the Rector of UCSH, Jorge Baeza Correa, highlighted some positive data of the Salesian University in Chile: "We are pleased with the results, but we see clearly before us the challenge to provide the best for young people. Our aim is to help them to develop to the maximum of their ability by providing quality education. We want our training processes to promote personal development for the service of others."

Bro. Olmos built his speech around three pillars: the historical context of internationalization in the higher education sector; guidelines to promote internationalization from a Salesian perspective; and some guidelines to help ensure an adequate international dimension in the Salesian project.

From 2000 to 2008 Bro Olmos was Secretary General of Don Bosco University in El Salvador (UDB) and from 2010 to 2016 General Coordinator of the Salesian Institutions of Higher Education (IUS), based in Rome.

On 1 December 2016, he was appointed Rector of the Don Bosco University, with a mandate that expires in November 2020. Among the main concerns of his new role is precisely the internationalization of the institution as well as local and global challenges that touch on education.
