Peru - Floods affect the work of Piura; Salesians are committed to helping those in need

04 April 2017

(ANS - Piura) - The Don Bosco Salesian Institute in Piura is a well-known school in the city. It has more than 100 years of service to the community and its classrooms have seen generations of young people, many of whom today are important people. Now it has been hit by torrential rains. The river has flooded the playground and classrooms, and has entered every part of the school. Despite the efforts of workers and Salesians who had taken everything from the floor and placed it on the desks, the water reached 1.50 and then 1.70 metres ... ruining everything!

"Many things were lost because of the flooding - tools, sports equipment, library books, materials for teachers and administrative offices" they say.

The Salesian work is located on the left bank of the Piura River, so the flooding was inevitable in that context. Witnesses say, "The waters entered everywhere, flooding the whole place. We managed to move the older Salesians to another Salesian community, before the waters reached the house and the places where they were living."

Piura is experiencing an emergency situation, with thousands of people affected by flooding and incalculable material losses, but at least the gestures of solidarity and support were not long in coming.

Seeing this terrible situation, the Salesians are helping people who have nothing: Fondazione Don Bosco in Peru and the Salesians are committed to bringing food to various shelters in the city.

The most difficult situation is yet to come, as the floods are far from over and the waters gave way to mud and sewage, resulting in the proliferation of mosquitoes, which transmit disease. Drinking water is scarce, and this increases the risk of diseases such as Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika.

Another important concern is that "more than a thousand children and young people cannot go to school, because the facilities are closed for damages" according to the media.

The Salesian Province, through the Don Bosco Foundation of Peru, has organized a solidarity campaign "Give me a hand, Peru."
