Italy - School-work alternation experience of Salesian Institute "Bearzi"

07 September 2017

(ANS - Udine) – It's the end of the first year of experimentation of the dual school-work alternation system at the  Vocational Training Center of the Salesian Institute 'G.Bearzi' in Udine. Headed by Fr Igino Biffi, SDB, it allows 18 boys studying the mechanical industry to graduate with actual work experience. Most of them have already signed an apprenticeship contract with their host companies. In July, after returning from their internship for a couple more weeks of school, the term ended with the final exam, involving both formation partners, to certify the acquired skills.

The project was met with positive feedback from both students, who have also had the fortune of finding a job opportunity in such difficult times, and by coordinators and teachers, enthusiastic about being part of such a wholly new experience. "Once we overcame our initial fears," says Santiago, one of the students in the fourth-dual class, "I quickly adapted to the new pace required of work, and I had a great relationship with the employer and colleagues, always available to help me and teach me something new."

Regarding the organizational aspect, contact with the companies for their involvement in the school-work system, and the definition of employment relationship, was fundamental. Some boys had the chance to sign an apprenticeship contract immediately, while others proceeded by alternating school-work, which should be understood as a formation project headed by prof. Guerrino Castellani, coordinator of the dual class alongside prof. Carlo Lucis and Giulio Armano, and the head of administration, Dr. Cristina Salvador, who reported that they found "great interest from employers in experimenting with this new way of establishing a working relationship with young people."

The role of teachers has changed from an ordinary class. Giampiero Castenetto, a mechanics teacher, claims to have organized his course by "paying more attention to the technical-applicative aspects, examining a problem to try to solve it. This because many students who are going to work in sectors such as welding or machine tools will have to deal with the problems themselves."
