(ANS – Rome) – World Cleanup Day, a global social action programme aimed at combating the global solid waste problem, was celebrated worldwide on 15 September. The “Don Bosco Green Alliance” actively promoted this event among its members, encouraging Salesian institutions across the world to organize a cleanup activity either in their own campus or in their neighbourhood.  Responding to this invitation, several Salesian institutions involved young people in various activities on that day.

The “Dominic College”, a Salesian institution in Glenorchy, Tasmania, Australia, came up with the innovative idea of combining a cleanup event with their daily fitness programme. Accordingly, a ‘plogging’ (picking up rubbish whilst jogging) event was organized, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the students. In addition to this activity, throughout the day students of different classes looked for areas around the College that needed cleaning. A focus within classrooms was investigating small changes that students can make that will have a positive impact on the environment. This was achieved through watching a series of short clips online, followed by classroom discussions.

Don Bosco Technical Institute in Ashaiman, Ghana, has been focusing on the UN vision 2030 “to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all”.  Keeping this in mind, the students organized cleanup activities and awareness programmes, both within the campus as well as for the locality on World Cleanup Day.  “We are very grateful to Fr. Krzysztof Nizniak (AFW Provincial Economer) for his support during these activities. His involvement was a great morale booster to propel us forward,” said Kenneth Dodzi Anlonyah, who coordinated the day’s programme.

In Coimbatore, India, Don Bosco Anbu Illam and Don Bosco School of Excellence conducted a week-long World Cleanup Day programme and concluded it with a public campaign in Gandhipuram and Ukkadam Bus Stations in Coimbatore on 15 September. In the city of Baroda, Don Bosco Snehalaya involved young people in cleaning up some of the public pavements near the institution.  In Mumbai, GreenLine, a Salesian Environmental Organization, involved over 300 students from 6 different schools in the city in cleanup drives on the Dadar, Mahim and Juhu beaches.  All these cleanup activities helped to educate the students on proper waste disposal and the need to work for a cleaner planet.

Don Bosco Green Alliance is an international collective of young people from Don Bosco institutions and organisations that contributes to global environmental action, thought and policy.  The alliance focuses on creating an environment that is safe and caring for all life on the planet, while building up a new generation of environmentally committed citizens and leaders.
