Spain - Salesian Family reflects on how to care for families starting with Youth Ministry

16 October 2018

(ANS - El Escorial) - How to train parents in the task of education and the transmission of faith to their children? How to accompany couples on their journey to marriage? What attention should be given to families when they are going through times of crisis? These are some of the themes discussed during the First Days of the Salesian Family of the "Spain-St James Major" Province (SSM), held at El Escorial.

From 12 to 14 October about 200 members of the Salesian Family reflected on the theme "The shared mission: the Family and Youth Ministry."

Among the participants: Fr Stefano Martoglio, Councilor for the Mediterranean Region; Fr Eusebio Muñoz, Delegate of the Rector Major for the Salesian Family; Fr Juan Carlos Pérez Godoy, SSM Provincial; and Sr. Maria Rosario García, Provincial of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in Spain.

The conclusions underlined the need to favor meetings with the families, to organize as a system the proposals of Family ministry, to take care of the affective education of young people, to work on accompaniment, to advance in communion among the groups of the Salesian Family, propose joint actions in the mission, collaborate with the local church in initiatives of this kind, and more.

The event was organized around three main talks. The FMA Provincial in Spain offered her reflections on the family and on Youth Ministry as a challenge for the Salesian Family. Salesian José Luis Guzón offered the keys to and the Salesian reading of the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia. José Luis Villota, Delegate of the Youth Ministry of the SSM, presented a number of interpretations for a family-oriented Youth Ministry.

The talks were concluded by Fr Muñoz, who spoke about the possibilities that arise when the activities are carried out in and as shared responsibility and stressed that one of the challenges is "working with the people who form the great Salesian Movement and who find their own core animator within the Salesian Family."

"Living in the family is a way of fulfilling our charism, an objective to be privileged in our apostolic mission and not simply a strategic option," said Fr Pérez Godoy at the closing of the Days. "We are a spiritual and apostolic family and the apostolic strength of our Family depends on the unity of intentions, on the common spirit that we share, on the method and the educational style that characterizes us: Don Bosco's Preventive System."
