Río Negro, Argentina – January 2024 – About a hundred young people, leaders, lay people and consecrated individuals gathered at the Stefenelli Retreat House in Río Negro for the"Cafasso Experience", a School for Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) leaders in the Comahue Region. From 26 to 28 January, with the motto "Listening transforms us", inspired by the figure of St Joseph Cafasso, John Bosco's formator and confessor, there were there were opportunities for understanding what it means to listen, and for active listening. Practical experiences were shared on how to accompany young people today and how, by combining these two actions, one can transform reality and links with others. The meeting was accompanied by Salesian Brother Agustín Camilletti, Delegate for Youth Ministry in the Salesian Province of Southern Argentina (ARS). During the final Eucharist, presided over by Fr Darío Perera, ARS Provincial, postnovices Augusto Bravo, Leonardo Díaz, Braian Fernández, Luciano Piccirilli and Mauro Rossato renewed their vows as Salesians.

Tandil, Argentina – January 2024 - A new edition of the School for Leaders was held at Villa Don Bosco, in the city of Tandil  from 2 to 8 January, involving 80 young leaders between the ages of 17 and 23. This edition is one of the formation opportunities for the Salesian Youth Movement in the Buenos Aires region of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians and the Salesians of Don Bosco and was the second and last year of the School (the first took place in January 2022). The key elements of this second cycle were Salesianity, education and Christian commitment, which helped young people to make life choices according to the Salesian style. Accompanied by young people, Salesians and Sisters, during the days the participants were able to learn about the context and options made by St John Bosco and St Mary Domenica Mazzarello and their project to respond to the challenges of their time: "the oratory". The event was accompanied by FMA and SDB, with the presence of Fr Darío Perera, Superior of the Province of Southern Argentina (ARS), and Sister Silvia Boullosa, FMA Provincial, who sent a message addressed to young people.

Santa Fe, Argentina - January 2024 - According to INDEC (Argentina's National Institute of Statistics and Census) data, poverty rates in the country are alarming, with many families lacking the resources to meet their basic needs. Many families ministered to by the Salesian presences in Santa Fe and Rosario also live in this condition. Hence, the Salesian Family is mobilizing resources to support people in families suffering the scourge of poverty and destitution and are literally on the streets. Thanks to collaboration with the 'IRSA Foundation', the Salesians of Santa Fe and Rosario have helped more than 240 vulnerable families from the neighbourhoods of Ludueña, Los Hornos, Hipódromo and San José. In particular, bags containing foodstuffs were donated to the three Caritas offices, located in the "Domenico Savio" and "San José" churches and the "Don Bosco" parish. In addition to the delivery of food aid, a support network has been set up that includes technical training workshops and job placement possibilities.

Anisacate, Argentina – January 2024 - From 3-7 more than 800 "Exploradores" of Don Bosco from the provinces of Salta, Córdoba, Tucumán, Mendoza, San Juan, San Luis and Santiago del Estero celebrated their summer camp. The experience, enriching for all participants, took place in Anisacate (Córdoba), and was organised by the Northern Region of the Argentine Explorers of Don Bosco. Under the motto "A heart that dreams, a thousand who live it", inspired by the Rector Major's Strenna 2024, young people experienced days of workshops, catechism and games. The summer camp was accompanied by various Salesians, in the presence of Bishop Alejandro Musolino, SDB, Auxiliary Bishop of Córdoba, and Fr Horacio Barbieri, Superior of the Salesian Province of Northern Argentina (ARN). Bishop Musolino expressed his joy at having participated in such a beneficial experience for young people, underlining the importance of these meetings for their integral development.

Junín de Los Andes, Argentina – January 2024 - 14 young Salesians from the America South Cone Region have come together at the Ceferino Namuncurá House in Junín de Los Andes in preparation for their Perpetual Profession. They belong to the Provinces of Brazil (BRE: 3, BSP: 2, BPA: 1, BMA: 2, BCG: 1), Paraguay (1), Chile (1), Ecuador (2) and Argentina (1). They are accompanied by the formation team made up of Fr Vicente Tirabasso (ARS), Fr Paulo Profilo (BSP) and Fr Félix Levín (CIL). In this meeting the young Salesians explore their own vocational history, discernment and motivations to strengthen their option to follow Christ in the style of Don Bosco. As part of this dynamic there are moments of prayer, fraternity and sharing based on the Constitutions, the Criteria and Norms, the Ritual of Profession and subjects related to religious life, but with an experiential methodology aimed at moving towards full humanisation and an integrated religious life. Junín de los Andes is a city in Argentine Patagonia that presents beautiful landscapes where you can contemplate the Andean chain and, in a Salesian way, you can find the fruits of Salesian youthful holiness, through the history of young Blesseds Ceferino Namuncurá and Laura Vicuña.

Alta Gracia, Argentina – January 2024 – On 6 January a large crowd gathered to accompany the Three Kings from the Don Bosco Oratory to the Estancia esplanade. The enthusiasm of the little ones was evident, gathered with their families to receive the Kings in Alta Gracia. The Salesian oratory has been in charge of this event for 82 years, working in coordination with the Municipality. Two floats accompanied the trip of the three kings, which took place from the oratory to the centre of the city, where the artists put on a show on the esplanade at the Jesuit Estate, with Christmas carols and other songs performed by tenors Luis Lima and Sebastián Spina, accompanied by dancers and guest singers. The arrival of the Three Kings is always a celebration for all citizens, families are eagerly waiting for them and the little ones are happy to receive various sweets and biscuits from their hands.

  • Italy – A Salesian on the front line of the war in Ukraine: "Being close counts, words come later"

(ANS - Rome) - As he tells with a gentleness that does not seem to come from horror, he is "resting a little bit" in Rome these days. Fr Oleh Ladnyuk is a Ukrainian Salesian priest who is a military chaplain at the front, among the soldiers who fight in defence of their country and among the civilians who for over two years have seen their lives wiped out. He brings humanitarian aid where the missiles fall and from those places he helps with the evacuation of young people and adults - so far at least 500 people, but there are probably many more. These days the Salesian – who carries out his ministry in Dnipro and teaches History in a state school in the city – is in Rome to take part with two other priests and a dozen lay people from his country in the "Accompanying when Trauma Hits" course hosted by the Pontifical Salesian University in collaboration with the Faculty of Educational Sciences, with the DON BOSCO NEL MONDO Foundation and the Don Bosco Network. A project that aims to provide theoretical and methodological tools to deal with the traumas caused by war.

  • Latin America – Strengthening Vocational and Educational Commitment Today: 30 Years of the Salesian School in Latin America

(ANS) – Since the first meeting in Cumbayá (Ecuador), 30 years ago, educational processes on the continent have found a collaborative epicentre which has given rise to the Salesian School in (Latin) America  – ESA, in Spanish – as a forum for reflection and a common path. Many Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA) and other groups of the Salesian Family (SF) have enriched this synodal journey, focusing on young people and their integral development.  What are today's demands of us in the educational field? How are we building the Salesian School of the future? Can we further strengthen this great Salesian educational network in America? Some FMAs and Salesians who were at the first meeting in 1994, share their experience and their vision of how this journey has allowed a growth in the understanding of the youth reality, in the strategic decisions within the Provinces themselves and in the challenges that emerge for Salesian education.
