Seville, Spain - 1964 - On May 28, 1964, a statue of Don Bosco was carried in procession by the workers of the furniture factory in Seville. The image of the saint, coming from the furniture factory itself and appropriately decorated, accompanied the workers in the Corpus Domini procession.
Turin, Italy - October 1853 - The first construction made at the Oratory in Valdocco was in favor of children; from 1853, Don Bosco took a small room on the third floor for himself. Subsequent rooms were built in 1876-1877 (cit. G. Fedele, 124).
They call us YOUTH experts. I do not know if we are experts, but one thing is certain: we Salesians have youth in our DNA since the moment Don Bosco dreamed of us, thought of us. Our identity is so tied to them that one cannot conceive a Salesian as being far away from young people.
Turin, Italy - 1848 - According to tradition, Mamma Margherita started the practice of leaving a message to the children before they went to sleep. But it was then Don Bosco who gave a short speech to his boys every day, which in time took the name of "Good Night". Don Bosco began this custom in 1848: "From that moment on, I began to give them a small sermon after the prayers of the evening," he narrates. If this "chair" could bring back all the good stories of Don Bosco, we would be able to relive the charism of the Saint in his original version.
(ANS - Freetown) - While the world is talking about attacks in various parts of the globe, the deaths of Barcelona, Spain, and the situation of insecurity in numerous parts of Europe, death and destruction have devastated areas of Sierra Leone where, in Freetown, the poor and forgotten live. "We have begun to receive the survivors," writes Salesian P. Jorge Crisafulli who, with the Salesian community, works to help the survivors with all kinds of needs.
(ANS - Castelnuovo Don Bosco) - The relic of Don Bosco, stolen last 2 June and recovered after a few days by the Carabinieri, was returned to the Basilico of Colle Don Bosco on 16 August. Here is how Fr. Fabio Attard, General Councilor for Youth Ministry, expresses his thanks to the Carabinieri and the sense of the Sanit's "presence."
Myanmar - Don Bosco in the country: yesterday, today and tomorrow
(ANS - Anisakan) - From November 27 to 30, Pope Francis will be on an apostolic voyage to Myanmar and, in view of this important event, we have asked a few questions to Fr Bosco Zeya Aung, Provincial Vicar and Delegate for Formation in Myanmar.
THE DARK FACE OF INTERNET
If we wanted to find a metaphor to fully describe the revolution caused to society since the introduction and use of the Internet, we could certainly compare this phenomenon to the discovery of a new planet, a new continent, a territory continuously being explored that we cannot manage to fully fathom, one we repeatedly marvel at, that surprises us with ever-new aspects and unexpressed potential.
Great Britain - SYM Europe on its way to "Synod on Youth"
(ANS - Bollington) - The 13th General Assembly of the Salesian Youth Movement of Europe (SYM) took place from 17 to 19 November. The meeting was held at the Savio House in Bollington, Great Britain. This year's annual SYM Europe event was attended by 55 representatives from 14 European countries.
RMG - Salesians for the Elimination of Violence against Women
(ANS - Rome) – In the world, at least one woman in three has suffered some form of violence in her life: at home, at work, at school, on the street. "No one should be left behind: let's put an end to violence against women and girls" is the theme proposed by the United Nations on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, scheduled for tomorrow, November 25. It is an objective that sees the Salesians at the forefront, especially the most fragile and vulnerable women belonging to minorities and, for this reason, discriminated against - twice.
MESSAGES OF THE RECTOR MAJOR
ONE MISSIONARY RETURNS, ANOTHER 34 LEAVE FOR THE MISSIONS
I chose this enigmatic title for my greeting this month because I want to make reference to one Salesian who spent 18 months in captivity and another 34 SDBs and FMAs who will leave for the missions in various parts of the world. Ever since the very first one on November 11, 1875, there have been 148 missionary expeditions for our Salesian Family. These evoke the profound feeling that grace is at work.
