Turin, Italy - 1922 - The Michele Rua Salesian Oratory celebrates its first 100 years this year. It was in fact 1922 when Fr Lunati opened the doors of this oratory, which soon became a place of worship and play that welcomed many children, children of the many migrations that have colored the face of the neighborhood. Even today, like 100 years ago, the oratory welcomes many young people, all of whom are part of the large community of Michele Rua.

(ANS - Turin) - The "Michele Rua" Salesian Oratory in Turin has just started celebrating its first 100 years of life and service to young people. Like the first Valdocco Oratory, it too began as nothing more than a canopy and a courtyard, but soon it grew together with the neighborhood and the city, educating entire generations and forming good Christians and honest citizens.

(ANS - Zhytomyr) - Built in September 1994 in Zhytomyr, a city of almost 300,000 inhabitants, 110 km west of Kiev, Ukraine, the school "Vsesvit" was established thanks to several Italian benefactors who, during a trip to the countries of the former USSR, decided to give a concrete response to the appeal of a group of citizens who wanted to open a Christian school. That school, for almost two years now, and after several years of cooperation and preparation, has become Salesian; and now the Sons of Don Bosco who run it intend to place another typically Salesian structure: an oratory, alongside the existing educational center.

(ANS – Stockholm) – A woman, young, committed to evangelization and education to the faith of children and young people in one of the world’s most secularized countries, Sweden: Fiorella Bastidas, a catechist in the Salesian parish of Jakobsberg and animator of youth ministry projects and activities at a national level. Today she tells ANS about her commitment and efforts.

(ANS - Manouba) - On Wednesday 29 December in Manouba, a city on the outskirts of the capital Tunis, the first “Tunis Oratory Ensemble Day” was held in the Salesian house founded about 30 years ago and now a primary school and youth center oratory. Young people, animators, and managers of the new oratory in the center of Tunis, built at the "Don Bosco" ex-Marianist school, made their first outing and went to share a day of sports, games and group activities with the oratory of Manouba, the "firstborn", established in 2013 thanks to the dedication and enthusiasm of the Salesian brother Roberto Lionelli, currently serving in Madagascar.

(ANS – Rzepczyno) – During the 2021 Extraordinary Visitation conducted on behalf of the Rector Major by Fr Václav Klement, Extraordinary Visitor “ad nutum” and “pro tempore”, Rzepczyno Salesian Youth Center was chosen as the last of 28 communities in Poland (another 5 communities of PLN are located in other 3 countries). Since 2007 Rzepczyno Youth Center is growing as a Valdocco of the Province. It’s one of the 94 Youth Centers in Poland where find their home young people in need. Until now already almost 800 young people were welcomed in this Valdocco and the educators are happy to keep in touch with 70% of their past pupils.

  • Italy – A Salesian on the front line of the war in Ukraine: "Being close counts, words come later"

(ANS - Rome) - As he tells with a gentleness that does not seem to come from horror, he is "resting a little bit" in Rome these days. Fr Oleh Ladnyuk is a Ukrainian Salesian priest who is a military chaplain at the front, among the soldiers who fight in defence of their country and among the civilians who for over two years have seen their lives wiped out. He brings humanitarian aid where the missiles fall and from those places he helps with the evacuation of young people and adults - so far at least 500 people, but there are probably many more. These days the Salesian – who carries out his ministry in Dnipro and teaches History in a state school in the city – is in Rome to take part with two other priests and a dozen lay people from his country in the "Accompanying when Trauma Hits" course hosted by the Pontifical Salesian University in collaboration with the Faculty of Educational Sciences, with the DON BOSCO NEL MONDO Foundation and the Don Bosco Network. A project that aims to provide theoretical and methodological tools to deal with the traumas caused by war.
