Kyushu, Japan – November 2023 – The pilgrimage that saw students, teachers and Dean of the Tang King Po School in Hong Kong travel to Fukuoka and Nagasaki, on the island of Kyushu, Japan, has just ended. These were intense days during which the group visited ten churches, including the Chapel of “Mary the Survivor”, which preserves relics that miraculously survived the atomic bombing, the natural site of Unzen Jigoku, the Museum and Monument of the 26 Martyrs and the Museum of the atomic bomb in Nagasaki. This pilgrimage was an opportunity to learn more about Japanese history and culture. It was an experience that helped to reflect on the sacrifices made by early Christian missionaries and recalled the importance of cherishing the faith even in the face of adversity. By coming into contact with a different culture, it enriched the understanding of the Christian faith in a different cultural context.

(ANS - Santiago de Compostela) - "With the start of the Salesian pastoral campaign for the new academic year titled 'A dream for you', to commemorate the bicentenary of the dream of Don Bosco at the age of nine, we were all invited to 'dream'. Well, I must admit that, when we are able to dream, dreams sometimes come true! And I can confirm this -because, for the second year in a row, I have realized this dream: to have the pilgrimage to Santiago, accompanying a group of inmates. These are the words of Fr Pepe González, SDB, in charge of the Prison Ministry in Jaén, after pilgrimage to Santiago this year with 80 inmates from 10 detention units throughout Spain, with involvement of various chaplains, volunteers and officials from the different centres.

(ANS - Krakow) - Every year, on the Sunday preceding Karol Wojtyla's election as Pope (16 October 1978), Pope John Paul II Day is celebrated throughout Poland and in Polish communities abroad, during which people unite in prayer with the current Pope and deepen their understanding of the teachings of St John Paul II.

Aparecida, Brazil – August 2023 – An extraordinary celebration filled the National Shrine at Aparecida with devotion and testimony of faith, with an emphasis on the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary. On Saturday 19 August, the Shrine hosted the 23rd Salesian Family Pilgrimage with some 12,000 pilgrims taking part. The traditional pilgrimage consists of a route from the port of Itaguaçu, where the venerated image of Our Lady of Aparecida was first found, to the National Shrine. The Provincial Delegate of the Salesian Family, Fr Luiz Gonzaga Piccoli, stressed the importance of the collective effort to make the event possible, from the preliminary planning to the realisation of the pilgrimage. He expressed his gratitude for the dedication of all those involved, emphasising the participants' expression of faith and devotion.

(ANS– Chimpay) – Once again the small rural community of Chimpay is preparing to welcome thousands of pilgrims, who between Friday 25 and Sunday 27 August 2023, will arrive in this town in the Province of Río Negro, which gave birth to Blessed Ceferino Namuncurá, to pray and thank God for the gift of the "lily of Patagonia". It will be the 53rd "Pilgrimage of Faith to Chimpay", which this year will take place under the motto "With Ceferino, sowers of hope today", and will take place on the occasion of the liturgical anniversary of the memory of the Blessed on 26 August.

(ANS - Fatima) - At the end of World Youth Day in Lisbon, the boys and girls of the Salesian Youth Movement took part in the pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima on Monday, 7 August, to give thanks for what they had experienced during these days and for the accompaniment they had received from the Mother of God throughout their lives.

  • Italy – A Salesian on the front line of the war in Ukraine: "Being close counts, words come later"

(ANS - Rome) - As he tells with a gentleness that does not seem to come from horror, he is "resting a little bit" in Rome these days. Fr Oleh Ladnyuk is a Ukrainian Salesian priest who is a military chaplain at the front, among the soldiers who fight in defence of their country and among the civilians who for over two years have seen their lives wiped out. He brings humanitarian aid where the missiles fall and from those places he helps with the evacuation of young people and adults - so far at least 500 people, but there are probably many more. These days the Salesian – who carries out his ministry in Dnipro and teaches History in a state school in the city – is in Rome to take part with two other priests and a dozen lay people from his country in the "Accompanying when Trauma Hits" course hosted by the Pontifical Salesian University in collaboration with the Faculty of Educational Sciences, with the DON BOSCO NEL MONDO Foundation and the Don Bosco Network. A project that aims to provide theoretical and methodological tools to deal with the traumas caused by war.
