Gathering with the bishops of Peru, the Pope began his message speaking of the great bishop Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo, proposing him as an example of a pastor: "He wanted to go to the other (river) bank in search of those who were faraway and those who were missing. To this end, he had to leave the comforts of the bishopric and travel across the territory entrusted to him, in continuous pastoral visits, trying to reach and stay wherever he was needed (...). Today we would call him a 'street' bishop. A bishop with the soles of his shoes consumed by walking, from encounters to announce the Gospel to everyone, in all places, on all occasions, without delay, without repulsion and without fear."
In his name and spirit, Don Bosco was inspired in founding the Salesian congregation and the Salesian Family, whose main focus regarded the growth and education of young generations, with special attention to the care of children from less-affluent classes; he, furthermore, preferred the method of dialogue and gentleness based on happiness, kindness and love.
Morocco - Msgr Cristóbal López, SDB: "Relations with Muslims are generally very good"
(ANS - Rabat) - The Archbishop of Rabat, Salesian Msgr Cristobal López Romero, speaks of relations and collaboration between Christians and Muslims in Morocco and of a dialogue that develops on four levels: the dialogue of life, in schools, sharing and common prayer.
28th General Chapter: the same questions that pushed Don Bosco
With the letter addressed to all the Salesians of the world, the Rector Major set off the journey towards the forthcoming 28th General Chapter (GC28), a chapter presenting two interesting novelties: the return to Valdocco, 62 years after the last one the Salesian “Mother House” hosted, the CG18; and, above all, the approach. In fact, it is the first time that a General Chapter of the Salesians takes its name from a question: "What kind of Salesians for the youth of today?"
Portugal - "Young people commit to participate in Church life"
(ANS - Fátima) - The Portuguese bishops met in Fatima to address the theme of young people, youth ministry and vocations in the context of the forthcoming Synod of Bishops. On the agenda, issues related to accompaniment, faith, vocational discernment, the space that young people have in parish communities, the integration of young people and their contribution to evangelization. In support of the work of reflection of the Portuguese episcopate were Fr Fabio Attard, General Councilor for Youth Ministry, and Fr Mario Óscar Llanos, SDB, Dean of the Faculty of Educational Sciences of the Salesian Pontifical University.
Vatican - Acknowledging, Interpreting, Choosing: steps of the Church towards young
(ANS - Vatican City) - "Beware of blaming young people for their distance from the Church"; instead, proceed towards an "institutional conversion, which concerns the way we live and work together". These are some of the suggestions offered by Salesian Fr Rossano Sala, SDB, Special Secretary of the Synod of Bishops on "Youth, faith and vocational discernment", during the press conference to present the Instrumentum Laboris of the Synod - the working document for the synod fathers.
MESSAGES OF THE RECTOR MAJOR
I HAVE SEEN AND HAVE LIVED DON BOSCO’S MISSIONARY DREAM
My dear friends, I greet you all most cordially as I write this to you – though I am very late as regards preparation of the Salesian Bulletin. (I make the editor sweat because very often the deadline for submission is upon me as I sit down to write my message – which happens with everything else that bears my name and is penned in my own hand.)
