(ANS - Rome) - Contrasting children's educational poverty in Italy by promoting a better quality of life for young people: this is the mission that for 24 years has inspired the work of the “Salesians for Social Welfare”, or SCS/CNOS Federation. In 2016 there were approximately 9,000 children in difficulty who were, on a daily basis, offered some of 163 services activated throughout Italy. These and other data are cited on the 2016 Activity Report now available on the website: www.salesianperilsociale.it.
(ANS - Sao Paulo) - The fourth and fifth day of the Rector Major's Animation Visit, at the Brasilia-São Paulo (BSP) Provincial Office, reserved an intense program of appointments for Fr Ángel Fernández Artime. Among the most significant moments: tribute to the venerable Salesian Fr Rodolfo Komórek, and the visit to the headquarters of Cancão Nova, the 25th Salesian Family Group, at Cachoeira Paulista.
(ANS - Thiès) - Located on a plateau 70 km east of Dakar, in the direction of Bamako, Thiès is an industrial city with a steadily growing population as well as an important railway junction. Much of the population, in fact, works in the railway yards, its workshops, or in the aluminum and phosphate mines of which the area is rich, or in the manufacturing of tapestries typical of the area. Here the Salesian presence dates back to 1978 when missionaries working at Saint-Louis founded a center in the area, and later managed to build a vocational training school, the Don Bosco Center, which has been operating for almost 30 years.
Mexico – Fr Novoa Leyva on caravan of migrants heading to Tijuana: "They are people in a special situation"
(ANS - Tijuana) - The Salesian Fr Agustín Novoa Leyva is responsible for the "Tijuana Salesian Project". In this interview he offers, without prejudice or bias, a view on the arrival and reception of the caravan of migrants now reaching the border between Mexico and the United States. To remember that migrants are, first of all, people.
Communicating in the network: a language to learn again
It is a fact that digital communication is a challenge for the Church. In the last Synod of Bishops, the network is spoken of as a space of evangelization, like a continent to explore, like a new place to live. The old "information highways" have now become true "constellations of content", with about 1,400 million websites on the network and their number grows exponentially, while every day new virtual communities of meetings and discussions arise according to the different tastes and needs of people.
Ecuador - Salesian Education Congress: event in 21st century oratorian style
(ANS - Quito) - The Salesian Education Congress, which took place from 13 to 15 November at the Salesian Polytechnical University of Quito, ended with a commitment to continue to reflect and contribute to the pedagogical model that Don Bosco promoted at Valdocco, taking into account the many new challenges that arise in the formation of new and forthcoming generations. Fr Javier Herrán, Rector of the university hosting the event, underscored that the three days were indeed thought-provoking profitable days, in the oratorian style of the 21st century.
Democratic Republic of Congo - Does charity for beggars really help them or helps them stay on the street?
(ANS - Lubumbashi) – On leaving the main streets of Lubumbashi in the evening one might even see and meet a thousand children on the sidewalks and intersections. They are all between about 7 and 12 years old, both boys and girls. Where do they come from and what are they still doing on the street at that time of night?
MESSAGES OF THE RECTOR MAJOR
GOOD NEWS STILL EXISTS!
I am writing to you, my dear friends, just a few hours after having bestowed the missionary cross on a group of ten Daughters of Mary Help of Christians and twenty-five Salesians of Don Bosco who will leave in this 149th missionary expedition. We count the number of expeditions from the very first one prepared by Don Bosco himself for November 11, 1875. On that occasion, the first ten Salesian missionaries were sent to Argentina: six young priests and four Salesian brothers. Those first ones have been followed by about 11,000 Salesians and 2,500 Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, 2,000 of them Italian FMAs who left Europe for the world.
