(ANS - Los Palos) - East Timor is a country which has suffered several conflicts, changes of government, riots, and so on. As always, the people pay the highest price and in this case in particular the children of parents who died during the war against the illegal occupation by Indonesia. It was in the midst of this great misery that the Don Bosco orphanage in Los Palos was founded and has grown.
(ANS - Santiago) - One of the most emotional moments of the Eucharist celebrated on 16 August, the anniversary of the birth of Saint John Bosco, at the "El Patrocinio de San José" School, was a "public gesture to ask forgiveness for the damage caused to young people by some Salesians through terrible and horrific cases of sexual abuse." This gesture was also held in other Salesian centres in Chile.
(ANS - Bahía Blanca) - It's been 15 years since the social and educational project "Pibes de Don Bosco" (Don Bosco Boys) finally took shape. Since then this work has grown and has also managed to attract many people. It was with the 2001 crisis and the proliferation of homeless people and "cartoneros" (people who collect newspapers and cardboard from the rubbish dump) that the idea came of providing accommodation, support and food for people in need.
Moldova - Fr Baracco: "being missionary" among the youngsters of Chisinău
(ANS - Chisinău) - "It's a very beautiful center because in my opinion it gathers all four elements of Don Bosco's house: a house that welcomes and hosts the needy, through the foster home; the playground, where one meets others and is educated; the school, with vocational training courses; and a church, thanks to our small parish, which counts only about forty Catholics," says Salesian missionary Fr Tiziano Baracco about the Salesian house of Chisinău, in Moldavia.
"Life is fragile, precious, unpredictable."
We are in the first weeks of a new year, which means a blank page wherein to write a new chapter in our lives. With the new year, one makes resolutions and looks at the calendar thinking about commitments to be made and forthcoming holidays to enjoy. Surely none of us would stop for a moment to think about the possibility of not reaching the end of the year...
Italy - Rector Major to IUS: "The right direction is much more important than speed"
(ANS - Rome) - The Governing Board of the Salesian Institutions of Higher Education (IUS) met at the Congregation's Central Office in Rome from 9 to 11 January, the aim to accompany the path of the IUS in each of the continents, follow up on the application of its common policies and programs, and strengthen the organizational and animation structures. The Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, spoke at the meeting, stating that "it is fundamental to have a strategic vision that adequately guides the processes of the Salesian institutions."
Spain - Salesians, busy with migrants and refugees: we welcome, protect, promote, integrate
(ANS - Madrid) – This new year Europe faces the same challenge of recent years: the refugee crisis. An unresolved problem that represents the tip of the iceberg of demographic movements. In the end, the challenge of welcoming and integrating migrants continues today. It is a challenge that cannot be foreign to the Church. In fact, for 104 years, it has promoted the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, which was celebrated yesterday, Sunday, 14 January, under the motto: "Welcoming, Protecting, Promoting and Integrating Migrants and Refugees."
MESSAGES OF THE RECTOR MAJOR
“DON BOSCO TAUGHT US THAT GOD WANTS US ALWAYS TO BE HAPPY”
It is most certain that Don Bosco is alive today, alive in so many different realities where thousands and thousands of people carry his dream forward, in the name of Jesus. And he is still alive because he continues to be their inspiration.
