Argentina - Don Bosco Rawson

02 June 2016

(ANS - Rawson) - Rawson is located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and is the capital of the province of Chubut. Low temperatures in winter mean that sometimes the electrical system collapses, because many people who do not have gas heating use electric heaters. On 28 May the Don Bosco Institute conducted its sixth charity event to collect blankets to be donated to needy families and neighbouring communities on the plateau of the province.

This year, for the first time, there was a further initiative to manufacture bricks from recycled paper to be used also as a form of heating for families who need special assistance during the winter.

The whole community was invited to participate in collecting blankets and to donate raw material 20x20 cm centimetres, fabrics, wool or linen. Last year they reached a total of 53 blankets.

According to Ivonne Iralde, Director of Istituto Don Bosco, "The project has a particular tone this year, since we are also making bricks of recycled paper to be used to heat homes in our neighbourhood." Several schools were involved in the collection of paper, in order to "build a team involving the whole population in this service of solidarity".

Ms Iralde observed that as "educational and pastoral institutions, this project has a great value, because it spreads the supreme Gospel value which is the service of others, and at the same time allows people to spend time with the family."

"For six years as a community we have been coming together to make blankets " says Marcela Merino, Director of the Initial and Primary levels of the Don Bosco Institute.

"We make blankets for babies and small children. We have two fixed recipients: the Rawson people who need help, whom we reach through various schools; and our brothers in the Central Plateau. When the Salesians do their missions in Lagunita Salada, Western Chacay or some other area, we give them blankets to take with them to be distributed as a gift to our brothers," concludes Ms Merino.
