Zambia - The Rector Major speaks to the Salesian Family

21 September 2016

(ANS - Lusaka) - Respect for woman, care of our Salesian identity, enhancement of the mission and growth in apostolic zeal - these were some of the topics touched on by the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, in the course of yesterday 20 September in Lusaka, as part of his visit to Zambia.

After a morning meeting with the Rectors of the Salesian Vice-Province of Zambia-Malawi-Zimbabwe-Namibia (ZMB), the Rector Major celebrated Mass with the Salesian Family and members of the St Mathias Mulumba parish in Lusaka-Bauleni. Celebrating the Mass of Mary Help of Christians, Fr Á.F. Artime pointed to Our Lady as a model from three points of view: as a woman, as a mother, and as our help.

Speaking to the members of the Salesian Family he stressed that it is a specific duty to take care of the dignity of women. They take care of life from the womb when the human being is weakest and at its most fragile. Helping, he said, means giving a hand to those in need, and he invited everyone to meet the people who need us.

After Mass he addressed a special greeting to the Salesian Cooperators, saying that he was deeply moved by seeing some of them who had come from faraway places. He insisted that "our mission is to be a family. [...] Wherever we are, whether in Salesian houses or in our homes, our Salesian charism will always be the same. We will be generators of life."

Then he left two message to the whole Salesian Family:

  • to be witnesses of communion and unity among the different groups;
  • to grow in our Salesian identity and in number.
