Argentina - Salesian House of Ushuaia to be declared a Historical and Cultural Heritage

23 September 2016

(ANS - Ushuaia) - As part of Teacher's Day - which is celebrated on 11 September in Argentina - Thomas Bertotto, a Councillor of Ushuaia, together with other colleagues, met with the Salesian Rector and parish priest and other members of the community of "Nuestra Señora de la Merced" in Ushuaia, to finalize the draft resolution declaring the Salesian work in the city a Historical and Cultural Heritage.

"The proposed area has a great symbolic, architectural, cultural and social value for the inhabitants of Ushuaia; that's why we are asking the Municipal Executive to declare the Salesian work of Ushuaia a Historical and Cultural Heritage" the councillor said.

Building of the old parish church began in 1898 and it has remained active in all the  years of its existence, so that the population of Ushuaia - then still a small village of farmers - could have their own place to pray and attend religious services.

In addition to this important role for the first generations of people, the Church with its distinctive silhouette and its tower 15 metres high has always constituted one of the city's landmarks.

In 1911 the Salesian Fr José Boido founded, in the same block as the church, the first school, initially dedicated to Dominic Savio; later it was renamed San Benito and is now called "Colegio Don Bosco."

The community also has the pastoral care of several other chapels scattered throughout the territory of the parish.
