(ANS - Valencia) - With the arrival of the month of September and the start of school lessons, the Solidarity Foundation Initiative "Ángel Tomás" - the Salesian social service projects in Spain - has once again put in operation its day centres in Valencia with the aim of helping children at risk and their families. The language-learning projects in Cartagena and the social integration workshop have also reopened their doors.

To provide the most appropriate service the Don Bosco Day Centre is concentrating on sport this year. Sport is of great educational potential. The plan is to launch several sports projects that will attract young people, to encourage them to develop healthy lifestyles and acquire group and individual skills, through courses in basketball, football and cycling.

Aware that the family occupies a fundamental place in the educational processes, those responsible for the day centre are repeating this year the programme of training and support for families. This programme aims to provide not only useful knowledge and tools for the education of children, but also a space for sharing, dialogue and respect between parents so that they will feel accompanied.

Moreover, thanks to the efforts of the Foundation in Cartagena, the Salesians have already started to give Spanish lessons for foreigners and have started a toy library and other activities to promote the social integration of immigrants.

Currently the foundation supports 13 social educational programmes, run by 213 volunteers and staff. A total of 659 people benefit directly.
