Spain – An Air-raid Shelter of the Civil War Period discovered under the Salesian House of Sarriá

19 December 2016

(ANS - Barcelona) – An air-raid shelter dating back to the period of the Civil War has been discovered under the Salesian school of Sarrià, or rather in the factory which during the war was located in the place where today the educative centre is placed. The finding is the fruit of an historical research about the Industries of War in Catalonia (1936-1939), done by three B.A. students – Miquel Conesa, Bernat Mayer e Víctor Busquets – coordinated by their tutor, Lurdes Nieto. With this research, the three youth also won the third prize of the historical competition “EUSTORY”, for the youth of Spain, Portugal and Latin America.

The researchers presented their work on Monday, December 12th, at the auditorium of the Salesians of Sarrià. “The target was to make the patrimony of the school known through direct research and the study of the Civil War from different perspectives”, the tutor said.

The three students explained how they carried out the historical research and highlighted the importance of the investigative process, of collaborative work, and of access to the sources of information. They also presented an unpublished film that showed the good conditions of the historical patrimony they analysed.

Considering the extension of its structures and its location, the “F-14 Factory” of Sarriá was one of the main plants of the Commission of War Industries (CIG). As explained in the research, from inside the factory there was an access to an air-raid shelter, which the workers themselves had requested in 1937.

The shelter, with a total area of 417.96 m², is well kept and is constructed with reinforced concrete and is prepared for long-period emergencies. It comprises 2 bathrooms, 2 storerooms and 4 corridors.

A few weeks ago a team of specialized professionals could visit the shelter and found that everything was kept in very good conditions.

The Director of the School, José Abascal, explained how, following this research, and thanks to the works, a staircase of access to the shelter could also be opened.

At the end of the presentation, the Director General for Officially Recognized and Private Schools of Catalonia, Miquel Garcia, underscored the educative value of the research work and congratulated the students and the educative community on this work. It is worth mentioning that among those present, there were also the Provincial of the Salesians, Fr. Cristóbal López, and the Provincial of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, Sr. Isabel Pérez.
