Chile - Salesian Family helps fire victims

08 February 2017

(ANS - Talca) - Chile is one of the countries in the world most affected by major fires. The most recent fire, according to reports, burned about 590 thousand hectares of land. It was the worst in 15 years. This was a catastrophe that destroyed not only many homes, but has also brought death, poverty and misery to many families. The Salesian works have mobilized and have started a programme to help needy families.

The first activity on behalf of the people affected by the fires was on the feast of Don Bosco. The Salesian Family in Santiago was organized to address the serious situation caused by forest fires.  They asked among other things for bottled water for those affected and for the volunteers.

The students of the Talca Salesian Educational Centre, together with their families, brought aid to families affected by the fire in the town of Curepto.

After conducting a solidarity campaign in the Institute, they reached the region devastated by the flames to distribute what they had collected. "It is impossible not to feel challenged by this. Therefore, as parents and guardians of a Catholic school, we are committed to help," said Mauricio Espinoza, President of the General Centre for Parents and Guardians.

Mr Espinoza also said that this experience has enriched the collaboration with other schools, firefighters, rescue workers and railway staff of Talca-Constitución. "It gave us the opportunity to serve, to bring help to the Curepto families," he said.

To date we have brought aid to the areas of Deuca and El Rincon de los Manzanos. Food was sent to Constitución, and the towns of Toconey, Carrizal, Pichamán and other areas in the interior.

With the support of families, the Salesian Family was able to collect basic supplies and bottled water and have been to various reception centres where there are entire families who have lost everything. They brought them food, clothes and a word of encouragement.

Solidarity in these times of misfortune is the sign of a special love for the many people who have lost everything.
