Chile - Mgr. Bastres Florence’s message: "Woman, Star of Chile"

08 March 2017

(ANS - Santiago) - "A society which recognizes itself as modern and democratic must recognize the right of all women in order to allow them to contribute to the public and political life of our country, and to create the conditions for their participation and their contribution". This is what His Exc. Mgr. Bernardo Bastres Florence, Salesian Bishop of Punta Arenas, said in a message published on the occasion of international women's Day, which is titled "Woman, Star of Chile".

The Bishop sends "with deep and brotherly affection, a greeting of peace, of hope and gratitude on the occasion of Women's Day, to all the women of the nation, that every day, as mothers, grandmothers, wives, daughters, students, workers, consecrated, work diligently to build a more just and fraternal society".

In 2010, on the occasion of the Bicentennial of Chile, the book "Woman, Star of Chile" was published, in recognition and gratitude to the many women who, in Chilean history, contributed with their personal, family, social, occupational and ecclesial life, to nation-building. Today's occasion, the Bishop writes, "is an opportunity to re-read this text and thank many women who with different activities accompany our journey".

Mgr. Bastres Florence therefore addressed a special greeting, assuring his prayers, to women who have suffered the loss of a spouse or of one's home, work, their cattle in the fires that hit the forest areas in the past months.

"May the Lord of Life, with his Word teach us to appreciate, value and respect women - concludes the message - and we are confident that both the men and women enjoy the same dignity. In imitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Star of Evangelization, may every woman be the bearer of the Good News and the new Life which flows from the Lord".
