Italy - ADMA Primary: First Steps in the Family

13 April 2017

(ANS - Turin) - Forty couples participated in a climate of joy and happiness, in the first course of "First Steps in the family", organized by ADMA and the Youth Ministry of the Salesian Circumscription of Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta. It is intended for young couples in the early years of marriage or engaged couples who have already set the date. The proposal is one of the initiatives of the Salesian Family in response to the Apostolic Exhortation "Amoris Laetitia" and the Strenna of the Rector Major to promote the accompaniment of families especially in the first years of the life of the family.

Just as babies cannot walk or talk when they are born, so the bride and groom need to learn the secrets to being married and happy. They need to learn the nature of the relationship of affection between a man and woman with their differences and complementarity. Newlyweds want to be trained and accompanied to savour the grace of marriage that operates 24 hours on 24 and helps them to live the fullness of married life and to overcome the inevitable difficulties. They understand readily the importance of not becoming isolated, but building networks of relationships, to savour the joy of dialogue and forgiveness. Gradually they discover the beauty of life and become open to the gift of life and the joy of becoming parents.

The course was also an opportunity to experience communion and complementarity between the states of life: the team that accompanied the young couples was composed of married couples, nuns and priests.

They learned the beauty and richness of the sacrament of marriage, the cornerstones of married life - the secret of forgiveness, the importance of prayer and spiritual direction - and those of parenthood. Above all they learned that in marriage they must put Jesus at the centre if they are to learn how to say "thank you", "sorry" and "excuse me", and to realize that difficulties can only be overcome as "we."

Everything was done in the Salesian style and in a family spirit. It was not only an opportunity for formation, but also a chance to share experiences and create relationships between couples. The series of meetings ended with a retreat in Muzzano, on 1-2 April, when couples gained a better understanding of conjugal spirituality. They also enjoyed the contribution of the Provincial, Fr Enrico Stasi.
