Ecuador - "Forgive With Joy": a Shuar Youth Congress that has gathered over 500 young people

06 June 2017

(ANS - Tuutin-Entsa) - Various indigenous tribes live in the vast forests of the Eastern Province of Ecuador and the Peruvian province of Loreto. One of these tribes is "Shuar", a warrior people by tradition. Years have passed; the Christian faith has arrived. Missionaries instilled the value of forgiveness and the Shuar now live in a world where everyone is one single family.

In the last week of May, the Shuar experienced a meeting of fraternity, reflection and joy on the occasion of the XVI Shuar Youth Congress. This time, it was the Tuutin-Entsa community, located in the Amazon jungle, that welcomed over 500 boys and girls from different communities who all came together with their "Wea-Etserin" (catechists).

"The Family" was the meeting's central theme. "The Family as a School of Life," as indicated by the Rector Major through the Strenna for 2017. Specifically, the congress, only open to the indigenous youths, directly addressed the importance of "Warasar tsankurnairartai", meaning "forgiving with joy and goodwill. " As the starting point for reflection, through the Word of God, the parable of the good Samaritan was examined.

The congress also saw moments of reflection and further examination through activities such as theater, workshop and representations conducive to a better understanding and interiorization of the topics discussed. On Saturday evening there was a time of sharing; the meeting ended with the Sunday Eucharist.

The congress was organized by the "GEMS" group with the support of various religious, sisters and volunteers.

"It is important to thank God for the wonder that this Shuar Youth Congress was," Don José Delporte SDB, Taisha's pastor, concluded.
