Vatican – 10 Years of Fr Costa's Service to Vatican Publishing Library

29 June 2017

(ANS - Vatican City) - From July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2017: Exactly ten years at the leadership of the Libreria Editrice Vaticana (LEV), the body coordinating and chairing the editorial activity of the Holy See. It is the experience lived by Sicilian Salesian Fr Giuseppe Costa, who has performed his service under two Pontiffs, Benedict XVI and Francis, for the benefit of the universal Church and millions of readers all over the world.

Fr Costa was LEV Director in a period characterized by profound technological and social changes - which have greatly influenced the editorial world at the international - and ecclesiastical – level with the advent of Pope Francis and his peculiar communicative style.

In this context, certainly not without challenges or difficulties, the Salesian - also professor at the Salesian Pontifical University (UPS) and Consultor of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications - has been able to guide the LEV to achieve truly pleasing results: 10 years of positive budgetary results in today's decidedly precarious editorial world, just to achieve a level of economic stability; editorial contracts starting from about forty to over a thousand; the participation of LEV at international book fairs and events such as Turin and Frankfurt, which have made it better known worldwide; the systematic presentation of papers of the Magisterium of Pope Benedict and of Pope Francis, with heightened graphic design and with a significant increase in print runs; and, more generally, the re-configuration of the LEV as a true publisher, with work well-organized and distributed according to skills, plus systematic contacts with important National Bishops' Conferences, increased reviews and about approximately 100 book presentations per year ...

All the results, these, which today make the LEV "an editorial entity whose brand enjoys wide international recognition," as Fr Costa himself stated in a letter of greeting sent to journalists.

As a tribute, this past June 5, Pope Francis wanted to meet him and handed Fr Costa a personal letter of thanks.
