Tanzania - East Africa Provincial and part of his Council in a car crash

12 September 2017

(ANS - Morogoro) - Sunday, September 10, after completing a series of meetings with various commissions and provincial teams in Morogoro, Tanzania, Fr Simon Asira, Provincial of the East Africa Province; his Vicar, Fr Augustine Sellam; Fr Eric Mairura, Provincial Economer – driving at the time - and the new Director of the Mafinga Seminary, Fr Peter Mugo, were traveling towards the city of Mafinga. Around 13:30, local time, a truck driver who was overtaking another vehicle appears to have fallen asleep, causing him to crash into the vehicle the 4 Salesians were traveling in.

The accident occurred while the religious were driving on the paved state road crossing the Mikumi National Park, not far from the town of Morogoro, Tanzania.

The 4 Salesians were taken to the nearest hospital for first aid treatment and transported by ambulance to Dar es Salaam the following morning. Fr Mairura, whose clinical profile appears less serious, is still recovered in Dar es Salaam. Fathers Asira, Sellam and Mugo were transported by air this morning, September 12, to the Nairobi West Hospital, thanks to the collaboration of “AMREF”, an NGO. They are all being kept under observation. Doctors have not yet released an official statement.
