Ethiopia - Among lions, snakes and crocodiles to bring comfort to the needy

30 November 2017

(ANS - Pugnido) - The rainy season has passed in Pugnido, Ethiopia, near Gambella, and three new water wells have been inaugurated in the vast territory of this Salesian mission. But the difficulties one has to cope with, even simple trips between the various missionary outposts, are always innumerable and the work to be done immense. The Salesians face it all with zeal and faith - as Fr Filippo Perin, SDB says in his words below.

We've just had a visit from some of our extremely faithful friends in commemorating their son Andrea, who left us n a road accident several years ago, help our people with the precious gift of water wells. Thank you.

Now I'd like to tell you about our work in the many chapels around Pugnido. Let's start from our meetings: going to the river one morning, in front of our car: three lions. We stopped the car and let them walk a small distance away, but they stayed in front of us for about an hour, going in the same direction. Only when a truck and a motorbike from the other direction joined us did we manage to get them back into the forest.

Last week, instead, while pulling out a boat engine from the small garage, a snake jumped out at us.

Finally, along the river, we came across Nyang, a crocodile of more than 5 meters in length: it was more or less in its usual place, so now we know.

These are just some of the adventures that accompany us in our visits to the villages: then comes the most beautiful part - meeting with people. In some of the villages, our presence is of support and assistance: catechesis and prayer that seek to revive their faith, but also the creation of oratories, fields, games, concrete aids to the village, the construction of wells and mills ...

Then there is also the work in refugee camps: we go to the various little churches made of wood, mud and grass, and meet with the Christian communities. There is work with the catechists, listening to people, their problems. There is no real lack of material things here, but hope for a future: no one wants to stay here forever.

Many times, as we stand and face all of this, we feel like a drop in the ocean, but we work for the Kingdom of Heaven, a reign of hearts that overcomes every difficulty and problem and reaches the furthest boundaries of the earth, that is our reality.

A prayer today for these people and for you from me.
