RMG - Course for executives of Salesian Institutions of Higher Education

18 July 2018

(ANS - Rome) - The government and the animation of an Institution of Higher Education today constitute a great challenge: due to social, political, cultural changes, the increasing institutional complexity of higher education systems, the importance of ensuring a specific identity to the said institutions. For this reason, the Coordinators General of the Salesian Institutions of Higher Education (IUS) have organized a specific course addressed to its directors and managers.

IUS are institutions with a very recent history as regards higher education. In its midst, a Salesian university tradition is just beginning to form; in this ongoing process, it becomes a priority to develop a type of leadership in harmony with Salesian identity and mission and at the same time in dialogue with the context itself.

The course initiative - requested by the last most recent IUS Assemblies, and reflected in the Common Programs 4 and 5 (2012-2016 and 2016-2021) - intends to offer formation to those in the IUS who are called upon to exercise leadership and managerial functions.

"The program," explained Fr Marcelo Farfán, IUS General Coordinator, "has the aim of guaranteeing in every IUS a significant Salesian presence, at the quantitative and qualitative level, made up of religious and lay people capable of guiding and animating a cultural, scientific and educational-pastoral project."

The course will be structured through two modules, offered in different years; first for IUS managers of America, Europe and Africa; a program designed for IUS Asia and Oceania managers will subsequently follow.

The first module will be oriented to the understanding of the nature and organization of a IUS, while the second shall focus on guiding and managing the Catholic and Salesian identity.

For this first edition, the first module will take place from 24 to 28 September 2018 at the Don Bosco Catholic University in Campo Grande, Brazil, while the second module will be developed from 23 to 27 September 2019 at the Salesian Polytechnic University of Quito, in Ecuador.

The course will offer a global perspective on the opportunities and challenges that the current context of higher education presents at the IUS, will propose fundamental knowledge, criteria and tools that will allow participants to guide and manage the IUS with a Catholic and Salesian identity, and at the same time it will serve to strengthen the relationships of cooperation as a IUS network, starting from the exchange of experiences of leadership and the management of managers.
