RMG – Salesian Historical Researches n° 72

11 July 2019

(ANS - Rome) – Issue number 72 (January-June 2019) of Ricerche Storiche Salesiane (Salesian Historical Researches), the bi-monthly magazine of Salesian religious and civil history, published by the Istituto Storico Salesiano (Salesian Historical Institute) has been published. Highlights are the second part of the study of the "Kristu Jyoti College" of Bangalore, India, the essays on the Indian Salesian Philip Thayil and on the Venerable Polish cardinal August Hlond, and an analysis of Don Bosco's Marian homiletic drafts.

Kristu Jyoti College, Bangalore: storia e significato dell’apertura della prima istituzione salesiana nell’arcidiocesi di Bangalore – parte II (“Kristu Jyoti College, Bangalore: history and significance of the opening of the first Salesian institution in the archdiocese of Bangalore - part II”) represents the second installment of Fr Thomas Anchukandam's contribution to the presentation of this fundamental work of the Indian Salesian panorama. Besides presenting the historical, geo-political, social, ecclesial and Salesian context, the article illustrates the developments of this important theologate built to form priests prepared for a rapidly evolving world.

Don Philip Thayil: Visionario e Innovatore (1917-2003) (“Fr Philip Thayil: Visionary and Innovator, 1917-2003”) is a research paper written by Fr Mathew Kapplikunnel, which focuses on the visionary and charismatic figure of this atypical Salesian. A belated vocation, devoid of higher education and without special talents, he was however charged with an apostolic zeal comparable to Don Bosco's, which led him to carry out highly original Salesian-inspired initiatives, especially in the fields of social communication, art, culture and vocational promotion. Today the "Don Bosco Vennala" cultural center and printing press represent his very tangible legacy.

The third study deals with a complex topic: on March 9, 2017, during the Congress of theological consultors, the Positio super vita, virtutibus, fama sanctitatis of the Servant of God Cardinal August Hlond, primate of Poland, Salesian, was voted. Although the Positio received nine out of nine affirmative votes, the General Postulation of the Salesian Congregation was asked to provide feedback on several points. The study Sulle obiezioni circa i nove voti positivi espressi dai consultori teologi sulla positio per il processo di beatificazione e di canonizzazione del Servo di Dio cardinale August Hlond, primate della Polonia (“On the objections regarding the nine positive votes cast by theologic consultors on the positio for the process of beatification and canonization of the Servant of God cardinal August Hlond, primate of Poland”), of the author Fr Stanisław Zimniak tries to provide clarifications precisely on said objections, concerning the issue of apostolic administrators, regarding the heroic practice of the virtues of prudence and justice, and to religious vows and studies.

The journal then proceeds with the presentation of Gli appunti di predicazione mariana di don Bosco (“Don Bosco's Marian Preaching Notes”), edited by Fr Aldo Giraudo, which offers the critical edition of seven autographed preaching notes by Don Bosco kept in the Central Salesian Archive and composed on the occasion of several Marian feasts.

The publication concludes with the profilo (profile) of 'zealous Salesian, indomitable bishop' Msgr. Antoni Baraniak, archbishop of Poznań (1957-77); two note (notes) - one on the memoirs of the missionary historian Fr Luigi Bolla, and the other on the contribution to Salesian studies of Daniela Cavallaro;  numerous recensioni (reviews) of Salesian publications and segnalazioni (suggested readings).
