(ANS - Damascus) – There was, understandably, a worldwide reaction to the video message of the Pope on behalf of the Caritas Internationalis campaign "Syria, peace is possible." The Holy Father offered clear words of comfort to the suffering, support to the peacekeepers, a call to prayer, and a warning to those who want to take advantage of the war. His words have not left the Salesians in the country unmoved. "We who live in Syria, have listened with great respect and admiration to what the Pope said. As always, he was very brave to tell it as it is!" Below is the letter sent by the Salesians of Damascus.

Losing children, innocent brothers and sisters, every day because of the violence and hatred, causes great pain to us who live here and to the many friends and faithful who share with us this difficult situation!

First of all it helps and encourages us greatly, both Christians and our Muslim countrymen, to hear these sincere words on behalf of Syria and reconciliation. The people here are now very tired, they have lost strength and are no longer able to endure the war. The Holy Father is right when he says that the Syrian people are victims! It is the poor people who are paying the consequences of the conflict.

We join our voice with that of the Supreme Pontiff and we cry out saying: "There is no military solution in Syria, but only a political one.” Only through dialogue can the solution be reached.

The Pope says that peace in Syria is possible. Yes, it is possible when countries cease to send weapons to those who are fighting, when they cease to look at Syria as a cake to be shared, when they stop treating Syria as a stage where they can be seen by the world as saviours when in fact they are adding their fire to the hatred and division. The Pope said: "They caress you with the right hand and hit you with the left." We Syrians can really confirm the truth of that.

The best thing in Pope Francis' message is the invitation to pray for the suffering Syrian people. We truly believe that the Lord will give us His peace.

And we thank you who are always ready to pray and to support the Syrian people.
