The auditorium of the “Salesianum” of Rome was full of participants: “This year many members of the Salesian Family enrolled to feed on God and to strengthen their own Salesian identity,” commented Fr. Joan Lluís Playà, who is in charge of the organization of this event. The programme commenced with the presentation of the 21 groups of the Salesian Family in the world that are taking part in the event, with a special reference to Europe.
One of the main documents was presented by Fr. Juan José Bartolomé, SDB, who referred to “the family experience of Jesus of Nazareth in the synoptic tradition”. The Salesian Bible expert explained: “God wanted to be like us in order to save us, and he wanted to be born in a family…God wanted to learn to be one of us, to grow as a human being in a family, the cradle of life and love, where a human person is born and grows”.
Fr. Eusebio Muñoz, Delegate of the Rector Major for the Salesian Family, thanked all those present and invited them to live these days intensely and to feed on Salesian spirituality. “This encounter will enable you to strengthen the spiritual experience that brought you to Rome, and when you will return to your places of origin, you will be able to transmit this beautiful experience of fraternity”.
At the end of the first day, Fr. Á.F. Artime gave the Salesian “buona notte” (good night) and remarked with great clarity: “Dear Salesian Family, we were born not even to do works of charity, we were born to be witnesses of God, this is our fundamental identity. (…) In a world that tries to silence God, we – as Salesian Family – have a great responsibility: witnessing with our lives to the living God”.
