Philippines - Reception centre for street children in Tuloy sa Don Bosco opens its doors to charity

24 August 2016

(ANS - Muntinlupa City) - From 13 to 21 August, the village for street children known as Tuloy sa Don Bosco also became a shelter for 326 families and 1,063 homeless men, women and children, forced to flee from their homes because of fire. These displaced people are not so different from the people of Tuloy sa Don Bosco ... they are neighbours, inhabitants of the same streets,  students, oratory members, past pupils and friends.

Apparently a man set fire to their homes after a family quarrel. Domestic violence has its price. The people from Tuloy sa Don Bosco set to work to rescue the victims from fear, to reassure those who were grief-stricken and to give a shoulder to cry on to those who needed it.

It was quite moving to see the street children of Tuloy once helpless and powerless, now coming to the help of other people. It was amazing to see the whole community of Tuloy coordinate relief efforts together with the Department for Social Welfare and Development and government agencies at the local level, the private sector and the supporters of Tuloy. It was a real demonstration of uncommon unity and cooperation, and a wonderful witness to see religious and lay people working hand in hand in the mission. What happened was something unexpected. It was really amazing to see how the poor victims kept faith in God in spite of a feeling of abandonment.

The people are now back in their homes. Knowing the Tuloy people, however, ... the story of organizational and collaborative charity for these poor displaced people probably will not end here.
