Italy - 10 May 1884-2020: a re-reading of the "Letter from Rome" written by Don Bosco

14 May 2020

(ANS - Catania) - A new video entitled “Letter from Rome | May 10, 1884 is available on the Sicily Salesians YouTube channel. Once again, educational passion becomes a story, thanks to the help of the new means of communication.

The digital content will celebrate the 136th anniversary of the Letter that St. John Bosco wrote from Rome on 10 May 1884 to his Salesians and young people to renew affections, mutual esteem and live the Salesian charism to the full, taking care of the family atmosphere inside of one's educational work.

The video begins with the words of the Saint: "My dearest children in Jesus Christ, close or far away, I always think of you" and fully expresses the message that three young Salesian consecrated persons of the Sicilian Salesian Province (ISI) wanted to convey. They are Orazio Moschetti, Vito Mangano, and Ignazio Coniglio who, encouraged by the university professor of the Preventive System at the Faculty of Philosophy of the UPS (Salesian Pontifical University - Rome), launched into this storytelling project to narrate the educational action - pastoral care of three works present in Sicily, underlining the charismatic features that distinguish each of them.

The three young Salesians did and thought much about directing, photography, but above all the message to be shared via digital means to create a place capable of reducing distances and dilating time, relive the family spirit experienced by Don Bosco, by his mother Margherita Occhiena, and by the young people of the first oratory of Valdocco.

The first work takes the name of Colonia Don Bosco, in Catania, a structure entrusted to the management of the Don Bosco 2000 association and coordinated by several Salesian Cooperators who live the charism fully. This "house" has been welcoming unaccompanied minor migrants, mainly from sub-Saharan Africa, for several years, offering projects of welcome and integration for people looking for a better future.

The second "house" speaks of the scholastic situation and of the relationship between teachers and students. The Liceo Don Bosco of Villa Ranchibile in Palermo is a hotbed of young minds that mature thanks to the professionalism of the teaching staff and the confidence and joy that one breathes in the playground. Finally, the third story tells of the Salesians present in the San Cristoforo district of Catania, who for over 70 years have been promoting the continuous fight against all kinds of poverty.

The video ends with a message from the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, who in the chapel adjacent to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Rome expresses his wish that everyone continue the educational work of the Saint of the young, committing energies and skills to save the poor and abandoned youth.
