Working in 65 distribution points within the Indian megalopolis, as part of the "Feed My Mumbai" campaign, the pupils took turns in this humanitarian service, created with the intention of ensuring that no person went to sleep hungry in the evening.
For 100 days, flanked by numerous volunteers and by the Salesians of Don Bosco, the past pupils of the center of Andheri, while respecting the regulations imposed, courageously left their homes in order to distribute nutritious meals, already cooked, to the needy and disadvantaged. And the millionth meal was delivered on Sunday, July 12, to a person in need by one of about 300 "Corona Warriors" as the group has renamed itself.
Anthony Mascarenhas, President of the Association of Past Pupils of the "St Domenico Savio" Institute in Andheri, said: "Thanks to the Salesians who have been with us all, we have benefited many people in Mumbai alone, including migrant workers, slum dwellers, rags collectors, scavengers, daily wage workers, tribals, the elderly, people who ask for alms ... With 25 partner companies that supported our campaign, we started distributing food kits, hygiene kits, materials to organize a makeshift refuge ... in 65 locations in Mumbai, with over 300 people to collaborate."
The past pupils worked in tandem with the Canossian Daughters of Charity-Servants of the Poor [FDCC-Canossian Nuns], other volunteers and many "good Samaritans", to help - with selfless dedication - all that large mass of people who in the major Indian city in these days of pandemic and social crisis has remained without sustenance. The million meals delivered represent, in this mission, only an example of the fact that with a well-coordinated plan and action, great works can be achieved together.
Mr Mascarenhas concludes: “A big thank you to Father Brian Moras, Rector and Delegate, for his support along with the entire Salesian community, the Salesian Cooperators and well-wishers. We also owe a debt of gratitude to our Alma Mater, for making us what we are. We now look ahead, our aim is to reach out to more location/affected areas in Mumbai and rural belts in Maharashtra with the support of our CSR partners who are growing in number with each passing day.”
