India – Calcutta mourns death of Fr Joseph Aymanathil, a pioneer of education in the slums

27 July 2020

(ANS - Calcutta) - Salesian Fr Joseph Aymanathil, a doctor of canon law, had been the pioneer of quality education for many children in the slums, mostly Muslims, for more than thirty years. He had started an important education project and over time offered free lessons to young people.

He passed away on July 19, at the age of 73, due to COVID-19, to which he had tested positive in the previous weeks.

His collaborators now continue his work and continue in the daily distribution of basic necessities to the poorest, putting their lives at great risk.

Fr Aymanathil dedicated his life to the education of the children of the slums: about 600 young people benefited from his education projects every year. The lessons were divided between the Primary section in the hours 14.30-16.30, and the Senior section from 17.00 to 19.00. The teachers helped these children study and do their homework. In the classrooms, the students found desks, benches, and fans and could study in silence and with the right lighting system, all elements that are missing in the slums.

With the lockdown in place since March 2020, Fr Aymanathil was at the forefront and had organized 115 uninterrupted food distribution days in support of the "Don Bosco Solidarity COVID-19 Relief", the body that coordinates the Salesian response to the emergency from COVID-19. Together with his collaborators, he worked mainly in the area of the Kapali Bagan and Sealdah Railway Station in Calcutta.
