Spain – Vocational training school for young people from Seville's "Polígono Sur"

06 November 2020

(ANS - Seville) - “There are no words to express thanks for this second chance”. With this testimony, a young man from the Polígono Sur district thanked the organizations that made it possible to open a vocational school in this district of Seville which has a high rate of people in a situation of vulnerability. Thanks to the collaboration between the “Fundación Endesa”, the “Fundación Don Bosco”, and the Commissariat of Polígono Sur, 20 young people from this district of Seville now have this “second chance”.

All these entities have joined forces so that this vocational school can open its doors and train these young people from Polígono Sur, from today until next June, when the school year ends, opening an opportunity in the world of work for them.

“This intervention means for the 'Fundación Don Bosco' to consolidate collaboration with Endesa with a stable proposal, which since 2015 has already facilitated the improvement of the employability of many vulnerable people in the neighborhood. The vocational school will look after young people who have already left the education system, many of them without qualifications, and who do not have the training to enter the job market. Due to their age, they are in no man's land, which makes their inclusion difficult. But we believe in second chances,” said Antonio Mengual, Territorial Director of the "Fundación Don Bosco", at the inauguration last 26 October.

The profile of the initiative's participants corresponds to young people between 16 and 19, who find themselves in a situation of particular difficulty. The Vocational Training School offers an innovative educational proposal, based both on therapeutic and pedagogical methodology, and on emotional and social education. The objectives are to increase the level of motivation for personal formation, compensate for gaps in the curriculum, improve personal stability and maturity, promote positive influences in the environment, generate greater capacity and family involvement, and encourage positive habits and willingness to work.

At the same time, activities with young people's families, social and professional orientation sessions and pre-employment workshops in various professions are also planned. During the course, these young people will also visit companies from different sectors, as well as other schools and training centers.

The Vocational Training School will take place mainly in the Don Bosco Social Center, a structure that measures over 3,200 square meters and is equipped with classrooms, workshops, offices and multipurpose rooms for carrying out activities - an emblematic center of Salesian work with young people at risk, whom the King and Queen of Spain visited on 29 June.
