Italy – Salesians, pandemic, educational emergency. Rector Major: “Don Bosco? Always current"

28 January 2021

(ANS - Rome) - “Covid forces us to change the ways in which to be close to the young, much more online and much less courtyard, but this does not change our spirit and our mission.” On the eve of the feast day of the Founder of the Salesian Congregation, Sunday 31 January, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, Rector Major, spoke with Famiglia Cristiana, the leading Italian Catholic weekly, which publishes the interview in the issue in newsstands starting today.

“We were born in Turin to help the poorest children, we continue to do so everywhere in the world. This is and must remain our identity card. Whether it is the greatest economic poverty, whether it is for those who live without a family or in situations full of pain; or of those who find themselves even without a reason for living. Certainly there are many poverties. Wanting to reach them is an act of will and conviction that comes from faith. This is our case. There are certainly many people, families and groups in society who are very sensitive to this reality. Together, with them, we travel the same path,” Fr Á.F. Artime explains.

“Alongside the many who come to life and to whom we offer culture, vocational training, human and spiritual values in our schools, in our oratories, there are unfortunately still millions of poor, exploited girls and boys without opportunities for a dignified life, who are excluded and marginalized,” adds Fr Artime.

“When they feel that someone is interested in them, freely, simply wanting to help them without asking for anything in return,” he concludes, “then they experience that their life acquires meaning; they experience that there are people who are brothers and friends to them and sometimes even fathers - those fathers who they do not have or whom they miss - who accompany them on the journey of life. This reality, which goes hand in hand with the Salesian educational style and with the spirituality proper to our charism and our family spirit, ensures, I believe, the current relevance of Don Bosco's charism.”
