Spain – Young people, “influencers” in favor of Common Home

12 February 2021

(ANS - Madrid) - The care of Creation, of the Common Home, as Pope Francis has insisted many times, is everyone's responsibility, especially of the new generations. "Misiones Salesianas", the Salesian Mission Office of Madrid, as part of the pastoral campaign "Algo nuevo está brotando" (Something new is sprouting) of the Salesian Province "Spain – St James the Greater" (SSM), has prepared an awareness raising/educational package with which it aims to uncover which aspects are essential to know and put into practice to become responsible consumers.

The objective is to help children and young people transform the world into a more just place, starting with the care of the planet so much recommended by Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si'.

The educational material is collected and accessible on a dedicated webpage and includes activities for all educational phases. They can be implemented in educational centers, as well as in other non-formal education spaces and youth centers. It is structured along 4 axes or themes:

  • Ecosocial Justice: it is the nucleus that lays the foundations for what will be explored in the following axes. Concepts such as inequalities due to place of origin, gender, socio-economic situation, climate change are addressed at a general level ... And what are the alternatives to improve the situation ...
  • Responsible consumption and fair trade: how consumption affects global development will be analyzed through different activities.
  • Water: a common good, a heritage of humanity to be preserved and the right of all peoples.
  • Healthy and sustainable agri-food: the school garden and daily food will be used to investigate and learn about the agri-food system (from production to plate on the table), and its implications with the right to food, health and the environment.

Also, 5 challenges are proposed, which will be launched every Friday starting from February 19th so that young people are encouraged to participate by becoming an "influencer for the Common Home" and encouraging more people to change their habits, under the motto and hashtag #PonteEnVerde (GoGreen).

The challenges are:

  • February 19 - “Fair and sustainable clothing”: reuse your clothes or exchange them.
  • February 26 - “Healthy Eating”: make your recipe with seasonal, local or about to expire products.
  • March 5 - “Plastic”: clean up a natural environment from plastic or give a second life to plastic objects.
  • March 12 - “Meatless”: prepare a recipe without meat.
  • March 19 “PonteEnVerde”: describe what other small daily actions can help to preserve the Common Home.

The SSM pastoral campaign for this academic year includes a series of proposals for reflection, formation in values, prayer, activities for boys, girls, adolescents and young people. Furthermore, throughout the campaign, they will also work on two projects of individual and social transformation starting from a Christian vision of life: educating to care and educating to responsible consumption.

The #PonteEnVerde campaign is the concrete development of this project.
