Italy – Rector Major: "The Salesian Family is guided by the Holy Spirit"

25 May 2021

(ANS - Turin) – From 21 to 23 May, the world leaders of the 32 groups of the Salesian Family met online with the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, present in Valdocco, in what is called the “World Consulta of the Salesian Family”. The digital meeting mode allowed everyone to meet for two-hour sessions a day around the Father and Center of Unity of the Salesian Family, the Rector Major, in a space animated and guided by the Central Delegate of the Rector Major for the Salesian Family, Fr Joan Lluis Playá.

Two elements fundamentally occupied the reflection during the gathering: the deepening of the Strenna of the Rector Major for the year 2021; its theme: "Moved by hope: See, I am making all things new (Rev 21.5)"; and sharing on a question addressed to all the participants: "What is the most meaningful novelty of the Kingdom of God emerging in our group at this time?"

Fr Gustavo Cavagnari, a Salesian, professor of Pastoral Theology at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome (UPS), helped explore and discover how to live hope, taking care to face the present in a Christian and Salesian way.

The group work then made it possible to share the rich experience of the Kingdom of God that was generated in the different realities of the SF.

The meeting was enriched by messages of animation, moments of prayer and the guidance offered by the Rector Major. “The Salesian Family is guided by the Holy Spirit,” the Rector Major said at the end of the meeting. “If any situation is not guided by the Holy Spirit, in due course we could see its end,” he continued. “There is no other way, only to be guided by the Holy Spirit. This is also true for all 32 groups of the Salesian Family, regardless of their number or age ... So I invite the whole Salesian Family to be courageous. Yes, courage is the main condition for our growth towards the future. Even in the difficulties of the pandemic, 'fear' cannot be our paradigm ... ”

Thus, inviting everyone to look for signs of novelty, Fr Á.F. Artime added: “There are some small groups among the poor in the Brazilian favelas or among the indigenous people of Guatemala ... Small, but courageous and alive in the Spirit ... We must bear witness.”

The program of activities was completed by numerous communications from the various groups, especially from those who celebrate their General Chapters or significant anniversaries during the year, and by the presentation of some proposals by the SF Secretariat.

The Secretariat of the Salesian Family has undertaken to prepare a publication with the fruit of the meeting's work. For more information: www.salesiansfamily.net and www.sdb.org
