(ANS - Recife) - For the evening of Saturday 7 August, via YouTube, the Salesian Province of Brazil-Recife (BRE) organized a live show aimed at promoting the generosity of companies and individuals towards the needy population. The live solidarity initiative was born thanks to the coordination of the Directors and those responsible for communication of 12 Salesian works in the Province, under the direction of the Provincial Office for Social Communication. The initiative has given continuity to the commitment of the Salesians of BRE, undertaken since the beginning of the pandemic, to assist poor families by providing correct information, food and anti-contagion protection devices.

The works, this year, have received financial support from the Salesian Network of Brazil (RSB) which has allocated specific resources to support these initiatives. During the live broadcast, videos and testimonies were broadcast on the many initiatives carried out at the local level in favor of the population most affected by the pandemic and its consequences; interventions by the Directors of the communities who thanked all the benefactors; and valuable performances by artists and singers who, with music and messages of encouragement, also animated them with gestures of solidarity.

Fr Nivaldo Pessinatti, BRE Provincial, presided over the event, taking the floor at various times to welcome people, lead prayer and to express thanks for the donations.

At the end of this initiative, considering that a food basket with basic necessities was estimated to cost around 70 reais (around € 11.40), donations and food for over 200 baskets were collected. What was received will now be divided among the 12 participating works: by the will of the benefactors, 50 baskets will go to the “Dom Bosco” School in Recife-Bongi; 25 baskets to the oratory of Jaboatão; and the other 10 shall  receive resources for 15 baskets each.

The event was broadcast on the Province's YouTube channels, the personal one of the Salesian singer-songwriter Fr João Carlos Ribeiro, Vicar of BRE, and of the FM radio "Dom Bosco" of Fortaleza. It was also relaunched by digital and community radio stations linked to the Province.

“The best result of this live solidarity drive is, without doubt, the greater visibility offered to local initiatives, which may even involve other volunteers and benefactors,” commented Fr Ribeiro.

The show can be seen here.

Furthermore, the representatives of the houses that participated in the initiative met again, digitally, on Tuesday 10 August to evaluate the event's outcome. The good participation by the communities, the light-handed and engaging leadership, as well as the work of promotion and dissemination among the organisms of the Salesian Family, were all much appreciated.

Some suggestions for the future concerned the possibility of greater involvement of schools, pupils' parents, and all Salesian radio stations as regards  broadcasting the show. And while they are working on making short videos of the event and thank-you cards for the benefactors, they are already thinking about the possibility of replicating the initiative, perhaps on 1 December, for National Gift Day.
