Dominican Republic - Reviving the dream of transforming lives through the "Tree of Hope"

14 July 2016

(ANS - Santo Domingo) - St John Paul II wrote in the Encyclical Sollicitudo Rei Socialis “[Solidarity] is not a feeling of vague compassion (...) it is the firm and persevering determination to commit oneself to the common good: that is, for the good of all and of each individual because we are all really responsible for all." Today solidarity has various names. In Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, a "Tree of Hope" is being built. This is an initiative of solidarity, which aims to help various NGOs working for the benefit of people in need. The goal of this initiative by the Salesian NGO is to support the summer activities of 2000 young people who belong to the group "Boys and Girls with Don Bosco".

Creating or sowing hope is extremely important and beneficial. There are many people who will participate, for a month and a half, in building this "Tree of Hope."

"This can be done by purchasing a butterfly or an artificial flower which will help to make thousands of people happy. The butterfly or flower will be placed on that wonderful tree and transform it into an expression and a symbol of hope," says the Salesian Fr Juan Linares.

The four NGOs that will benefit from the initiative have different objectives, but they share one purpose - to help. For the Salesian group, Fundación Don Bosco, the goal is to provide summer educational activities for 2,000 children from the group "Boys and Girls with Don Bosco".

The foundation Nido para Ángeles intends to complete the construction of a hydrotherapy centre for 200 children. The NGO Save the Children aims to support and promote the idea of respect and guarantee that it will not tolerate any form of violence against children. While the Santa Rosa Institute for Aid to the Deaf wants to supply hearing aids to 21 children.

Generating hope is important because hope is the great engine of a person's life and fills us with courage and joy. The hope is not only for those who wait, but also those who give with love.
