In November 1846, Don Bosco had the first bell placed on the Pinardi roof.
The bell was created in the “Mazzola” foundry in Valduggia, in the province of Vercelli. It weighed 22 kg and cost Fr Giovanni Vola a little over 88 lire; he had ordered and blessed it.
Don Bosco used to recall that this bell would summon all the surrounding young people for the holidays with an effectiveness equal to that of a sermon.
In 1853, however, this bell was too small for the new bell tower of the church of San Francesco de Sales and so Count Cays gave another, which was larger and more effective for its clarity of sound.
In 1929, the two bells were fused together.
